Toronto looks to build on momentum vs. Houston

Soccer Betting Lines

05/15/2007 - Toronto, Ontario (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Just four days following the first victory in franchise history, Toronto FC returns to BMO Field looking for its first winning streak.

Toronto FC hosts defending MLS Champion Houston on Wednesday in the third of four straight homes games. The Dynamo had last week off but are also coming off a victory, 3-1 over Colorado.

Toronto ended a season of misery Saturday with a 3-1 win over Chicago. Prior to the victory, Toronto had yet to score and had lost all four games in its inaugural season in Major League Soccer.

But it's amazing what a few goals and a victory can do. Even if the club will be without striker Danny Dichio, who was sent off just before halftime against Chicago.

"The best thing was the way the team performed. They left everything on the field," Toronto coach Mo Johnston said. "We had to adjust a little bit when Danny was sent off and I felt the fans again were magnificent. I hope they bring that every week, because it's like a cup final - teams in America won't like coming here."

Dichio scored the first goal in Toronto history in the 24th minute off an assist from Edson Buddle. Dichio notched another first in the 44th minute when we was ejected for violent conduct.

"It's just a fantastic kind of emotion I went through today ... especially when the goal went in," Dichio said. "Obviously I was a bit upset with my sending off and stuff, but hey, we got the three points. The boys did really well in the second half and I'm happy for them as well."

Chicago tied the score in the 36th minute and when Dichio was sent off, Chicago's Diego Gutierrez was also given a red card for violent conduct. With both teams down to 10 men, Toronto got goals from Kevin Goldthwaite and Maurice Edu in the second half.

"It was down to 10 men on each side, and it's a big field," Buddle said. "[The two fewer players] opened it up and I think we were the fitter team playing at home. We were able to stretch them out and open up the game for us."

Ronnie O'Brien also made his season debut for Toronto FC, which gained a little momentum at the right time with defending champion Houston visiting Wednesday.

The Dynamo also got off to a sluggish start this season but erupted for three second-half goals to rally for a win over Colorado, which leads the Western Division. Houston had scored just one goal all season before the outburst.

"It was frustrating," said Houston striker Brian Ching, who has two goals this year. "The frustration continues to build the longer and longer you don't score. We just kind of got back to what we're good at. We put our heads down and work hard and stick to what we're all good at. That makes us one of the better teams in the league. We didn't let the frustration get to us.

"Things haven't really been going our way. Last couple games, two losses in a row, we had a sour taste in our mouth. To be the first (visiting team) victory (in Colorado) against a team that's been playing pretty well is uplifting for us. Hopefully we can continue to build on this and get some more wins."

Another great sign for Houston was star midfielder Dwayne De Rosario scored two goals in the victory over the Rapids. He had 11 goals last year to tie for the team lead with Ching but was struggling early this year.

Houston is tied for third in the Western Division with CD Chivas USA but can jump into a tie for second with FC Dallas with a victory. Toronto is last in the Eastern Division, three points behind D.C. United.

Toronto FC continues its four-game homestand on Saturday when D.C. visits BMO Field. Houston also plays twice this week, returning home to host New England on Saturday.

Football Betting: Defensive Rookie of the Year Awards

Oddsmakers have released the odds for the 2009 AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and Seattle Seahawks linebacker Aaron Curry has been made the opening favorite.

Bet on NFL Football

Seattle took Curry with the fourth overall pick in April's NFL draft and plan on inserting him into its starting lineup right away. The Hawks traded linebacker Julian Peterson in the offseason, so Curry is expected to have a significant role in Seattle's defense next year and that's one of the primary reasons he is the favorite to win the NFL ROY Award.

Oddsmakers from online sportsbook MySportsbook.com have made Curry a 5/1 favorite to win this year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Given that he was the best defensive prospect in this year's draft and how he'll have plenty of opportunities to make plays in '09, Curry offers a ton of value at 5/1.

Another thing working for Curry is the position he plays. A linebacker has won the defensive ROY award six straight times and eight of the last nine years. Jerod Mayo, Patrick Willis, DeMeco Ryans, Shawne Merriman, Jonathan Vilma, Terrell Suggs, Kendrell Bell and Brian Urlacher were the most recent linebackers to take home the award.

Following Curry at 5/1 are Tyson Jackson (Chiefs) at 7/1, James Laurinaitas (Rams) at 8/1, Brian Orakpo (Redskins) at 10/1, Rey Maualuga (Bengals) at 10/1 and Jerry Peria (Falcons) at 10/1.

All the players mentioned above are expected to start for their respective teams, but Jackson and Peria are going to have a tough time being recognized on a national level given they're both defensive linemen. D-linemen rarely put up the numbers that it takes to win an individual award like the ROY.

A couple of players with some value are Clay Matthews (Packers) at 12/1 and Larry English (Chargers) at 15/1. Matthews is expected to start at outside linebacker in Green Bay's new 3-4 defense and could rack up a ton of tackles. English, who was an impressive player at Northern Illinois, is expected to be a situational pass rusher for the Chargers and could rack up a ton of sacks.
