Tigers to get a taste of BoSox's Dice-K
Baseball Betting Lines
05/14/2007 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Two of the American League's top teams in the early going
begin a high-profile four-game series tonight at Boston's Fenway Park, where
the Red Sox entertain the defending AL champion Detroit Tigers in a battle of
current division leaders.
The Red Sox presently own the best record in the majors at 25-11, while the
Tigers own a 1 1/2-game advantage over second-place Cleveland in the tough AL
Central and had won 11 of their last 12 games before Sunday's 16-4 loss at
Minnesota.
Boston has posted victories in nine of its 11 most recent contests and enters
this set off a dramatic comeback win over Baltimore Sunday at Fenway Park. The
Red Sox scored six times in the bottom of the ninth inning to come through
with an improbable 6-5 triumph over the Orioles in the finale of a three-game
series.
Baltimore's Jeremy Guthrie took a shutout into the ninth but was removed after
Coco Crisp reached base on Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez's dropped pop up
with one out. The next six Boston batters would reach base against the
Baltimore bullpen, with Jason Varitek's two-run double off Chris Ray pulling
the Sox within 5-4.
After Eric Hinske was intentionally walked to load the bases and Alex Cora hit
into a force out at home plate for the second out, Julio Lugo hit a slow
roller between first and second. O's first baseman Kevin Millar fielded the
grounder and tossed the ball to Ray, who failed to handle the throw as both
Varitek and Hinske hustled home to give the AL East-leading Red Sox the
stunning win.
Boston is eight games ahead of both Baltimore and New York in the division.
J.C. Romero earned the victory with 1 1/3 scoreless frames of relief. Boston
starter Josh Beckett failed to become the majors' first eight-game winner of
the season when he was lifted after four innings with a torn flap of skin on
his right middle finger.
Detroit had been the AL's hottest club before last night's rout at the
Metrodome, which was sparked by a pair of home runs and a career-high seven
RBI from Twins center fielder Torii Hunter.
Virgil Vasquez had a forgettable major-league debut for the Tigers. The young
right-hander, who started in place of the injured Jeremy Bonderman, was rocked
for six runs and nine hits in just 2 2/3 innings of work.
Magglio Ordonez clubbed a two-run homer in the loss and Curtis Granderson
finished 2-for-5 with an RBI for Detroit.
The Tigers will get their first look at Daisuke Matsuzaka in tonight's opener.
The Japanese sensation has won his last three decisions for the Red Sox and
put together one of his best performances of the year last Wednesday in
Toronto.
Matsuzaka limited the Blue Jays to a run on five hits and fanned eight over
seven innings to help Boston post a 9-3 victory. The first-year major-leaguer
has not lost since a 2-1 setback to Toronto on April 17.
The 26-year-old has struggled in his three appearances at Fenway Park thus
far, bringing a 1-1 record and a 7.58 earned run average at home into
tonight's test.
Detroit counters with tough lefty Nate Robertson, who is coming off his worst
start of the year. The 29-year-old was tagged for six runs and 10 hits over a
season-low 4 2/3 innings of work in a home loss to Seattle on Wednesday.
Robertson, who is 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in five career starts against Boston,
has pitched well in two road starts this season. He tossed 7 1/3 shutout
innings to beat Baltimore on April 10 and allowed just two runs over seven
frames in a tough-luck defeat at Toronto five days later.
These teams split six meetings a year ago, with Detroit winning two of three
in their lone visit to Fenway. The Tigers are just 3-7 in Boston since the
start of the 2004 season, however.

The Kentucky Derby's post-position draw happened on Wednesday. And, as is always the case, shortly afterwards, a buzz raced around Churchill Downs. It was a low rumble at first, nothing that the squares in the mint julep crowd pick up right away. But by the time the sun set over the twin spires, the chatter was impossible to ignore. Everyone -- sharps, trainers, owners -- was talking about one thing: the wise guy horse, the pre-draw long shot us mopes didn't have on our radar until it was too late.
"You think you're hearing the scoop," says handicapper Lane Gold. "Then you get to the window, the odds are short, and you missed it."
Recognizing a wise-guy horse early is as hard as picking a Derby bonnet. That's because handicappers don't like hype (see ya, I Want Revenge). They want Thoroughbreds who look good losing prep races like the Santa Anita Derby. They eye horses who ate up the field after starting wide or made an easy transition from synthetic tracks to dirt. They look for ponies who showed muscle gain race to race and those who ran hard after several weeks' rest.
"A wise guy," says John Avello, a bookmaker at Wynn Las Vegas, "looks for a horse who can improve."
When I first wrote Horse Betting for The Mag, which I turned in a three weeks before Wednesday's draw, I predicted these three horses had wise guy potential:
CHOCOLATE CANDY (15-1 in mid-April, currently 20-1 according to Avello): His second-place finish at Santa Anita, following a seven-week layoff, proved two things: He can run after resting, and -- by losing a high-profile prep race -- he wouldn't be overhyped.
DESERT PARTY (15-1; 15-1): He was upset in the UAE Derby by a horse he had beaten twice. The public remembers his loss, but the wise guys his wins.
PIONEEROF THE NILE (8-1; 4-1): The big favorite at Santa Anita struggled to win, so he initially got less hype than Quality Road and I Want Revenge.
You may have noticed that the odds on Pioneerof the Nile have been cut in half, from 8-1 to 4-1. Which means the wise guys took a shine to him long before the post-position draw. But, to be honest, this is one of those years with four elite horses getting everyone's attention, squares and sharps alike.
"You're not gonna get a lot of chatter about a horse that isn't in that group, which includes Pioneer, I Want Revenge, Dunkirk and Friesan Fire," Avello told me Wednesday. "We don't have a group of horses behind those top four who look like real legit contenders."
Come Derby week, the final two elements in picking a wise guy horse are how he's working out and what gate he's coming out of.
(By the way, picking a Preakness favorite is a whole different bale of hay, partially based on how horses finish in the Derby. You can see my analysis of who has the best shot at Pimlico on Insider Sunday morning.)
Well, early in the week I Want Revenge, Pioneerof the Nile and Friesan Fire were working out better than anyone. Some thought Friesan Fire, currently 6-1, might have run too fast, burning a five-furlong run in :57 4/5. "When you are running that fast you have the sense that it took something out of him," says Gold. "The Derby is longer than any horse has run, and if they need that extra surge you worry they won't have it because they burned it in the workout."
But, Gold points out, Friesan Fire's trainer is Larry Jones, Two years ago his horse Hard Spun did a five-eighths workout in :57 3/5 and then went on to finish second, behind Street Sense, in the Derby. "Every trainer has different methods," says Gold. "And clearly he knows what he's doing."
Now, as for starting position, Gold says to remember this: Churchill Downs traditionally has 14 starting gates. For the Derby, it brings out auxiliary gates and between the original 14th gate and the new 15th gate, there is a little more space than there is between gates 1-14. "That 15 position will give you a precious second or two to sort out what's happening to your inside," says Gold. "Sixteen is also okay because you can follow the horse in front of you."
Dunkirk, one of the race favorites, is coming out of gate 15. In 16 is Baffert's Pioneerof the Nile. I Want Revenge drew 13, where Smarty Jones won from in 2004, and Friesan Fire picked the sixth position. "He doesn't have a lot of speed to the inside of him," says Gold. "So he will get a clear shot to be near the front."
All the jibber-jabber means this: Pioneerof the Nile has leapfrogged from 8-1 to being the second favorite, along with Dunkirk, behind I Want Revenge. Meanwhile, Friesan Fire, with a good trainer, a strong week of training and a decent post position, is still at 6-1. "By Saturday, it's possible he could go from fourth to the favorite," says Gold.
In other words, meet Friesan Fire, your 2009 wise guy horse.
"Now," says Avello, "it's time for action."

American Idol Betting Season 6 Strategies
It's that time of year folks. Betting on American Idol Season 9. And we have plenty of American Idol Season 6 strategies appearing below. With the Top 24 finalists revealed, online gambling sites will be offering betting odds on each of them, including MySportsbook.com.
No other “event” has been growing as fast as wagering on American Idol. It has turned into a huge betting event with reasonably high limits and all sorts of profit-making potential for sharp bettors. Last year, MySportsbook.com experienced unprecedented traffic as a result of the American Idol betting craze.
Every week there will be odds to win American Idol, various elimination props and contestant versus contestant match-ups at the MySportsbook.com website.
Whether a fan of America’s top-rated show or watching only because of a wife or girlfriend, here are some of basic strategies to use when betting American Idol.
Odds to Win
There are a few things to consider when looking for the right win bet. First off, remember that this bet is for the long haul. Many people make the mistake of picking the performer who sang the best the previous week. This strategy leads to an underlay situation – betting a price, which is less than what it should be.
All Idol contestants struggle at some point in the competition, so you should always look for value. In last year’s competition alone, two performers who had some of the best performances early in the series were subsequently bet down to low prices - Lisa Tucker and Ace Young. After just a few weeks, Tucker had already been eliminated, while Young quickly became a huge long shot to win America’s largest talent search.
A better strategy is to look for performers who don’t necessarily get the praise from the judges, but show flashes of the talent necessary to go the distance.
Another important thing to remember when betting any contestant to win is the demographic breakdown of the voters, the viewing public and potential future CD purchasers. Unlike sporting events, American Idol is not decided on the field of play – it’s decided by the American public under the guiding influence of the shows producers.
Understand that the great state of Alabama has a mighty edge when it comes to American Idol.
Therefore, to be successful betting on American Idol, put any personal opinions or prejudices aside and think like the majority of the voting public. Remember that the typical voter is young, female and quite often, Southern.
If a contestant cannot appeal to this demographic, no matter how much talent he or she possesses, they’ll struggle for votes. Looks, demeanor and charisma are extremely important. And it’s no coincidence that every Idol winner so far has hailed from a Southern state.
Elimination Props
Every week MySportsbook.com anticipates offering a prop on who’ll be eliminated from the show each Wednesday night. A suggestion to handicap this is to gauge an overall feel for who’s the least popular contestant left in the competition. Generally the least popular performers have recently appeared in the bottom three and will have been the target of repeated criticism from the judges.
Last year, resources included dialidol.com and votefortheworst.com. Dialidol.com measures the volume of each contestant’s voting line. While by no means a perfect science, it does give a good indication of who is generating votes and who isn’t. Meanwhile, votefortheworst.com is a site that attempts to build support for the worst competitor to keep them in the competition for ‘entertainment’ value. The site has a proven track record of keeping performers around who most feel should have been voted off a long time ago.
Contestant vs. Contestant Match-ups
The best strategy for doing well on match-ups is to assess how close either of the contestants is to being eliminated. If neither is expected to be voted off of the show in the coming weeks, the value is almost always on the underdog. If both are expecting an imminent exit in the near future, the favorite in the match-up might offer value.
Watch for American Idol betting odds on each of the contestants shortly and good luck with these American Idol betting strategies.
