(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Houston Rockets accomplished what they needed to in
Portland and now their Western Conference quarterfinals series shifts to south
Texas for a pivotal Game 3 tonight.
After opening the best-of-seven set with a rout in the Rose City, Houston had
to settle for a split in the Pacific Northwest after the Blazers evened things
on Tuesday with a hard-fought 107-103 win. All-Star Brandon Roy put Portland
on his back in that one, netting 42 points.
Roy, who also grabbed seven rebounds, stepped up with 12 points in the final
stanza, including a three-pointer during a pivotal 11-1 run down the stretch,
as Portland bounced back from an embarrassing 108-81 Game 1 loss, their worst
home playoff defeat in franchise history.
The 27-point loss in Game 1 also tied for the fourth-largest margin of defeat
in the postseason for the Blazers.
"I thought [Roy] played a really good game," Portland head coach Nate McMillan
said after Tuesday's win. "I don't think anything was forced. [Ron] Artest is
a really good defender and [Roy] took the shots he was given. I thought
Brandon stayed pretty calm against that defense with Artest and [Shane]
Battier."
LaMarcus Aldridge added 27 points and 12 boards for the Blazers, who are
appearing in their first postseason in six years.
The Rockets had a balanced offensive attack but faltered in the fourth. Aaron
Brooks led six players in double figures with 23 points, while Von Wafer and
Artest contributed 21 and 19 points, respectively, in the setback.
Yao Ming, coming off a 24-point effort in the series opener, was held to 11
points on 3-of-6 shooting with eight rebounds for Houston. Meanwhile, the
Rockets lost Yao's backup when 7-foot-2 veteran center Dikembe Mutombo
ruptured a quadriceps tendon in his left knee after getting tangled with Greg
Oden.
Mutombo, who won the NBA's J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for outstanding
service and dedication to the community on Thursday, was a defensive force off
the bench in Game 1, tallying nine rebounds and blocking two shots.
The Rockets, who are searching for their first playoff series win since 1997,
a span of six straight first-round exits, are also without the services of
standout swingman Tracy McGrady, who is out for the postseason due to
microfracture surgery on his knee.
Although Houston hasn't had much success in the postseason recently, the
franchise has never lost to Portland in the playoffs, winning a pair of five-
game series by 3-1 margins in both 1987 and 1994.
The Blazers last playoff experience was a tough seven-game series loss to the
Dallas Mavericks in 2003. Portland hasn't won a postseason set since besting
Utah in the Western Conference semifinals in 2000.
The Rockets won both meetings between the two clubs in Houston during the
regular season, including a 102-88 victory on April 5, Portland's only loss in
its last 11 games before the playoffs.
In fact, Houston has been a house of horrors for the Blazers. Portland has
dropped 10 of its last 11 trips to Space City.
Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday night in Houston.
